About the project

Cocoa for Schools (www.cocoaforschools.be) is a social responsibility project, started up by Kim’s Chocolates NV, focusing on community development and improvement of the infrastructure of primary and secondary schools in the cocoa growing villages in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Since 2016, 955 new classrooms have been constructed and another 838 have been renovated, allowing a drastic reduction of the number of students per classroom (from 96 to 46). Since 2021, the expertise acquired during this project has been applied to the construction of dormitories for girls, with the aim to provide a protective environment during secondary school. As the conviction that education is the key to family planning is a cornerstone of FEFP goals, FEFP is supporting this project in Tanzania. The aim is to build dormitories, each for 80 girls, with supply of drinkable water and appropriate sanitary provisions. Construction occurs in collaboration with local authorities, with 80% of the total cost provided by FEFP and 20% by the local community. Sustainability is achieved in as far as possible, and all material purchases are to the benefit of the local economy. So far, 3 dormitories and a large community hall have been completed in Kafundo (see video), and 1 dormitory in Nyasa Lake Shore (Kyela district). Nine more dormitories are under construction and nearly completed in the districts Mbeya City (1), Mbeya Council (1) Rungwe (1), Busokelo (1), Kyela (2), Chunya (1) and Mbarali (2). Complementary to the building projects, FEFP supports the “Tuzungumze” (Let’s Talk) clubs (see video). These are weekly in-school gatherings of the female students with the aim to provide education related to early sexual engagement and avoiding pregnancies, to discuss their rights, and to identify and develop their talents. This project is running in all 25 secondary schools of the Kyela district since 2022, with already a drastic reduction of early pregnancies observed. The project was extended in 2023 to the Rungwe (34 schools) and Busokelo (20 schools) districts, reaching out to 27,000+ girls.
